It’s Everyone’s Duty

Sunday, September 27, 2009

One of the many problems faced by the world today is drug abuse among the youth. That is why the numbers of drug rehab is increasing. I believe that the government, NGOs, churches and even schools need to work hand in hand to help those who have gone astray. Their choice to depend on chemicals is an indicator that they have problems and they need help. There is still hope and life beyond chemical addiction. They just need their family, friends, teachers and relatives to help them see that.

Typhoon Ondoy’s Rage

Because DH who is addicted to news and current events is away, I was so clueless about what has been happening in Luzon, good thing my Twitmates updated me via Twitter (obviously). I was shocked and overwhelmed by what I saw. Properties were submerged in flood water. Families had to stay on their houses’ roof to be safe. Some had to walk miles and miles just to get home and be with their families. Terrible and horrible.

Liz and I were talking just now and she mentioned about mother nature being very angry. It reminded me of one discussion that we had during our trauma healing and stress debriefing training early this month. The question was which is worse, man-made calamities or natural calamities. Our speaker used to think that it was man-made calamities. But during our discussion, she retracted and was convinced that natural calamities are worse. In man-made calamities like war, a ceasefire can be called to warring parties. But when a typhoon or earthquake strikes, you can’t say “Hey, stop it! Let the people evacuate first. You can resume once they’re done.”

I thought we’ve seen the worst here, when some parts of the city and the nearby provinces were (and still are) submerged in the flood. But I was wrong.

EB in Davao City

Saturday, September 26, 2009

Like what I mentioned in my previous post, I was able to meet some online friends when we went visiting Davao. Some of them asked if I am following an effective weight loss diet because I seemed to have lost some weight. I just laugh and tell them that they can’t see the fats because I am hiding them! Haha!

Another story: The first ones to arrive were this friend and me. I already recognized her from afar but she didn’t recognize me but she recognized Wes and Therese. She said that if I were wearing my sunglasses, she would have easily spotted me, thanks to my avatar. It was one nice afternoon and I can’t wait to see them again before the year ends. :)

The Meet-Up

Wednesday, September 23, 2009

I am finally back! (Two days later than I intended to, though.) There are so much to share about our recent long anniversary weekend trip but let me start with the meet up with my Davao-based online friends meet up. I am talking about Yen (who seemed to have lost weight because of an illness and not because she is taking some weight loss supplements), Tere (who was accompanied by her DH, Charles and their super adorable kid named CT) and Buchay (who is now based in Alabang but went home because of his father’s death).

The three of us met at the Pancake House. But since we were all full, we just had iced tea! DH and DD did some shopping and train-riding while I was busy chatting with my friends. As expected, we talked about our individual lives, blogging, families, work. It seemed as if it was not my first time to meet them! They are all kind and nice and very open. Yen and I were supposed to meet about a year ago but because of my schedule, we just keep on postponing it. I am so glad to have finally see them all in person. Finally!

There were pictures all right but nah, I am just too lazy right now to download them from the camera. And oh, I got envious with Tere’s long lens! I don’t really know when I can afford one. LOL!

Being Grateful

Saturday, September 19, 2009

It is a long weekend here in the country, this Monday being a Holiday. And I am spending it being grateful to DH and DD. See we are somewhere nice, taking a break and simply spending time to be together. This weekend, I am sure our souls will blossom some more. Ahh, life is beautiful!!

When Life hands you Lemons...

Make some lemonade!

I saw this in Facebook as someone's status. Sometimes we are too overwhelmed by things that happen in our life that we forget the things that matter more. Maybe we should re-focus and turn bad things into positive ones. There are lessons to learn in each experience. Remember, we are not given challenges to break down. They are there to shape and sharpen us. Remain positive!
Cheers!!

Where to find Paintball gears.

When I thought that paint ball war games have long been forgotten, I find myself stumbling upon a website that sells all things pertaining to such sport. At ZephyrPaintball.com, one will find paintball equipment, even gears like goggles, bags and Paintball pants. The store claims to sell their items at the lowest price there is in the market. Plus they offer free shipping for that added savings and convenience. Out of curiosity, I went on and checked other sites; found their claim to be true. Their items are also nicer compared to other stores. I will keep this store in mind; maybe write it in my notebook. So in case someone asks, I know where to point him/her.

Good bye, Van.

Thursday, September 17, 2009

Two nights ago, we lost a very good student, a responsible child and a trusted friend. Van Halen Dadang died due to a vehicular accident, along with 5 more victims. One was the tricycle driver. Then there was a mother, father and their adult child. The culprit, a pick-up driver who was drunk, is still in the hospital.

He was a consistent honor student. He was loved by so many! We were so amazed to know that he is in good terms with almost everyone in his class. Even his friends who do not belong to his college. Even the persons who were not able to become friends with him are grieving.

His father is a security guard of my mom’s office. His mother is a domestic helper in the Middle East. He is the eldest among the 5 boys. Their house is one of the many which have been immersed in the flood. His parents and friends can clearly see his success in his chosen career as early as now. He just turned 18 last August 11. He went home from his classes and he was just a few minutes away from their home when an irresponsible hit the tricycle that he was riding head on. His father was able to see his son die at the hospital. His mother insisted on going home after four years of working abroad. He is a Muslim and died on the month of Ramadhan.

We pray for the repose of your soul, Van. You will be greatly missed. Thank you for being an inspiration to many of us, for touching our lives. Please pray for us too.

Stressed.

Wednesday, September 16, 2009

It was one stressful day and I don’t have the energy nor the motivation to write about what happened. Maybe in the coming days. But here are some random thoughts on what transpired today:

1. Life is short, so we must enjoy every minute that we are alive and we are with the people we love.
2. Life is short so take time to let people know that you love them, what you appreciate about them.
3. Trust is essential in any relationship.
4. Working with people is very challenging. Extremely challenging and rewarding at the same time.
5. One must surround herself with good friends who will lift her up and pull her up when she is at her lowest.

And with that, I bid you good night. Have a good rest and ‘til next time.

Now It’s My Turn

Tuesday, September 15, 2009

I can’t remember posting it here but I know I did at Facebook. DD is an honor student during their recent 1st Grading Honors’ Convocation. Third honor, actually. Yay! I always make it a point to be there during honors’ convocation or any school event that allows parents to be present. Life is short and she is young only once. I have to enjoy those moments of glory of hers as often as I can. Yeah, it’s all for me. LOL!

Kidding aside, my parents never missed any of our honors’ convocation when my brothers and I were young. I can’t remember going up the stage during my grade school days to receive an award with a relative or a teacher. My parents were always there. Our old photos and even my memory can attest to that. When I won or qualify to some inter-school competitions, my mom always had prizes for me. I can’t remember what they were but I remember that she never failed to make me feel proud of myself. To make me feel that she is proud of my accomplishments. (And that again proves that I am one lucky and blessed girl.)

I want my little girl to remember that too. That she is loved so much and that we are proud of her accomplishments, no matter how big or small they might be. And a big thanks to my parents for setting a good example. I am very blessed to have them.

Relieved.

I gave in and popped a pill. The migraine that I have been suffering from had to stop so I can rest and be more productive tonight so I took one capsule of mefenamic acid to relieve the pain and be able to sleep for two solid hours. I am grateful that DH let me do so. He understands so well what happens to me during an attack. He took care of DD and some chores while I was dozing off. I woke up fresh and ready to work again.

Aside from my online tasks, I also need to prepare DD’s and my clothes for this week. I am looking forward to a great week, actually. And to a greater weekend! Yay! Why? Secret. LOL!

Enriching One’s Married Life

As busy parents, we should not forget that we are spouses and partners too. Aside from spending quality time with our kids, we should also put utmost importance to being with our spouses and bond with them. A strong relationship with one’s spouse ensures a healthy relationship with one’s children.

Activities like going a retreat, going on a date and others are good ideas for couples who wish to enrich their marriage. Wounded Healers (Part 3)

Like what I posted, I wanted to share some thoughts and experiences regarding our topic, Stress Debriefing and Trauma Healing. But then I left my notes at work so you have to bear with my thoughts for now. Generally on how I feel and think about the entire experience.

This isn’t my first time to attend such training. That I already shared before. But I think that I learned more this time. Maybe because I have matured (not aged ha. Haha!) and have read and heard about and even saw traumas in all forms. I have my share of traumatic experiences too but when compared to what others underwent or currently experiencing, mine looks trivial.

Basically, trauma breaks us. Our entire being. Our belief system. Sometimes our faith. Even our future. One person I talked with is 57 years old woman. She was not given the chance to heal from her traumatic childhood experience. Up to now, she is haunted by her that experience. And I feel for her. She looks tough on the outside. She is a happy person. Little did we know, she is suffering. She has been suffering.

But one thing I admired about her is her love for life. She continues to find ways to be healed. She is very much grateful for the love and support her family and friends have been showing her. And I guess, that is one of the most helpful element in the process of our healing. The presence of the important persons, their willingness to journey with us in the healing process. Their decision to embrace us in all our brokenness. That despite their own pains, they are there, willingly helping us gather the pieces of ourselves and help us put them back together again.

Wounded Healers (Part 2)

It was one stressful day. I had to juggle my time and energy between being a mom and at the same time a participant in the training. We were so immersed in the discussions that there were more than 20 messages in my inbox when I finally found time to take my mobile phone out of my bag.

I am hoping that I can write a coherent post about this day but I can’t. Not because I don’t want to share (because you know that I do. That’s the purpose of this blog.) It’s just I am too tired today. I want to really sleep now. But I still have some tasks to accomplish so sleeping has to wait. Hehe.

Anyways, I hope that you all have a great weekend. I hope to post today’s stories tomorrow. In the mean time, allow me to leave you with this very wise message: stressing-debriefing trainings can be stressful. Oha. LOL! Ta-ta!

Our Voracious Young Reader

Where, or how do you read your daily paper? If you are reading this, it is likely that you do it online. It is more convenient, easy on the pocket and helps Mother Earth too because it’s paperless! Being a freak for current events and news, DH regularly reads the news online. I do too, when there’s time. However, Sundays are different. Upon going home from the church, we usually pass by several newspaper sellers. Since some years ago, DH introduced DD to Philippine Daily Inquirer’s Junior Inquirer Magazine, it’s a must for us to buy a copy of the PDI every Sunday to have her Junior Inquirer fix.

Have I mentioned that she is one voracious reader? Yes, she is! She has a good collection of books. Though we need to sort them one of these days, box the ones that she doesn’t find interesting anymore (alphabet, counting, etc.) and make way for books in a box that we have been keeping. Those are right for her age now so it’s high time to let her read them.

Wounded Healers (Part 1)

To respond to the growing needs of our community, our office along with the other sectors in the university, organized a Trainors’ Training on Trauma Healing and Stress Debriefing. It is a 3-day training held at the university. This aims to train us to care for the wounded and broken, despite our woundedness and brokenness. Wounded healers, in other words.

This is not my first time to attend such training. Some million years ago (:p), my former officemates and I underwent the same training with the very same resource persons. These two ladies, Ms. D1 and Ms. D2 are very knowledgeable, adept and skilled about the topics. One of them, Ms. D1, once volunteered in East Timor. She is my OB-GYN’s sister in-law and I have known her since I was a college student. Her endeavors in peace advocacy work is commendable. I like her lifestyle and her perspective and outlook in life. She is very fluent too, just like her two other siblings who are both teachers at the university. On the other hand, Ms. D2 grew up in Basilan. Her experiences and education very well prepared her to the kind of job that she does. Her insights are enlightening and there are so many things that I think I will learn from her.

I am happy to have been included in the list of participants. The challenges are great, once we finish the training. But I look forward to them. ;)

Lucky to Have Him

Gone were the days when I spend most of my online hours browsing Facebook and playing games. When I went back to work, I realized that I need to prioritize and allocate my precious time on things and tasks that are more important than my games.

Upon coming home from school, I still have to prepare our dinner, help DD with her assignments and prepare our things for the next day. I need a good 6 to 8 hours of sleep too to keep me going the following day. It is nice that I have a very supportive DH. He understands my passion for writing and need to earn on the side.

Now that I have a long list of tasks, he has been taking charge of our suppers and breakfasts. I know that this is one nice surprise to his siblings. But yes, DH knows how to cook simple dishes and I am very proud of him. He has been taking good care of us and for that, I am very, very grateful.

It is indeed nice to have a supportive and loving partner who understands and really cares. Again, no doubt, I am one lucky girl!

Noynoy Aquino Declares Presidential Bid for 2010

A student who regularly visits us at the office shared a very good news to us this morning: Sen. Noynoy Aquino’s announcement regarding his big decision to run for president come 2010 elections. He has prayed hard and asked for guidance from several trusted persons before coming up with decision.

I am very happy to know that he will be running for the presidential post. He is one hesitant candidate, yes. He is not the best senator there is, yes. But I believe in him. He is after all, his mother and father’s son. Some says that he is not prepared to lead the country. And I ask, was her mother prepared when she took the challenge of serving as country? I will take the chance and give Noynoy a chance to prove that he is worth my vote. Some friends from the academe with whom I have been talking with are also rallying behind Noynoy and we all agreed that we will and shall campaign for him.

So here’s for Noynoy, our country’s democracy and the hope that he can initiate the change that we have longing for.

Tired. Happy. Sleepy. Excited.

It’s just 4 PM and you see me blogging. Yay! I filed for a half-day leave of absence to do some errands and to spend some time with my brother who came home from Manila. It’s been one and half years since we last saw each other. Aside from that, since we (DD and DH and I) have been spending Christmas in Pampanga and my brother has been working in Manila, bringing us all together has been rare. I was tasked by my mother to do the reservation in one of the restaurants here. That I already did after I did some shopping. Haha!

Yeah, I shopped for blouses again. The ones in my closet do not appeal to me anymore. :p And there was one design that I liked and it has a good fitting too, so I bought 3 in different colors. Hahaha! I also bought a birthday gift for one of our godmothers who will be celebrating her birthday tomorrow plus some greeting cards.

I went home tired and sleepy from all the walking. But since we are going to have a nice dinner early tonight, I need to stay awake or they (my family) might come and leave without me noticing it. LOL!

Missed.

Today is Notre Dame day. Happy birthday, Mama Mary! Being a Catholic school, we are having an activity honoring our Mother’s birthday but unfortunately, I was not able to go.

Two nights ago, I prepared for a planning activity for a student organization in the university. As their adviser, it is my task to facilitate it. I slept at 2AM yesterday preparing for that occasion. I arrived before 8AM at school. It was a holiday. They were scheduled to register at 7:30 AM but there was only one student when I arrived. They arrived one by one and we started the session at around 9:30. Some were fasting (as Muslims. It’s their holy month of Ramadhan, time to fast.) so there were no meals nor snacks served.

We ended the session at around 2 PM and asked DH (who also reported for work to finish his reports) to treat me to a late lunch. He hadn’t had his lunch at that time too. We tried an old restaurant near his office and was satisfied with the braised pork and siomai that we ordered. Their mango shake was yummy too.

After our lunch, I went home and slept. I woke up with a very bad case of migraine which lasted until late this morning. That made me miss the school activity. :( And I’ve proven it once again: staying up late and missing meals are definitely a no-no for me.

The Sunday that Was (09/06/09)

Sunday, September 6, 2009

How was your Sunday? Half of mine was spent sleeping! Because of an event that required my presence, I went home late last night. But before hitting the hay, I had to spend time on some tasks which made me sleep really, really late.

Today, we were supposed to attend the 8 AM Mass where DD was supposed to do an interpretative dance with her group mates but due to the weather, we stayed home instead. It is the vocation month launching Mass and DD was worried her group mates and teachers would get angry because of her absence.

Anyway, the sun showed up later in the morning. We attended the 3PM Mass instead. As usual, we proceeded to the grocery store for this week’s supply.

As always, I enjoyed my weekend because DH and DD are both with me. We did not go anywhere fancy nor did something exciting but just being together for me is priceless.

Have a great and productive week ahead!

Flood in Maguindanao

Yesterday, I joined a team that visited some flooded areas in the province of Maguindanao. It was saddening to see several houses destroyed by it. One teenager died last week due to an accident because of the flood. Many of the families in the area live below the poverty line so most of them are not covered by a mortgage protection insurance.

Several houses were now abandoned by their residents. One of those is the family of my former boss. She was with us yesterday and she pointed to us their house which is now immersed in flood water. She is lucky to afford the cost of transferring her families to the city but we pity those who can’t and have to live to the evacuation centers. There was a heavy downpour last night and an increase in the number of families in those evacuation sites is expected.

Here Comes Another Long Weekend!

Friday, September 4, 2009

Thank God it’s Friday! You know how I love weekends and holidays, right? And fortunately for me and all you long weekend lovers out there, a long weekend is upon us! Woot! September 7 was declared a holiday by the lady President herself to give mourners a chance to attend the burial of the Iglesia ni Cristo’s executive minister, Ka Erdy Manalo.

On another note, it was a busy and stressful week as I try to get back to the “normal” life that I once lived. That is going to work, of course. And aside from the long weekend, I also look forward to a lunch date tomorrow with some of my closest friends at work. It will be at our favorite cafe as usual and I can already guess the food that we are going to order. LOL!

On Sunday, DD will have another dancing engagement as her group will do an interpretative dance during the Vocation Month launching at the Cathedral. We’re all excited, of course! It will be our chance again to see her dance because she refuses to show us her moves at home! Haha! Silly little girl!

Well I hope you are going to have a great weekend! God bless!

Losing and Gaining Back

Today, a colleague shared to me that he badly and really needs to loose weight. I told him to consider trying crevax. He was once overweight for his height and thanks to his determination and self-discipline, he was able to shed unwanted fats successfully. We were all impressed! But when he transferred office he began eating more and obviously, gained back the weight he lost some years ago.

The position that he is currently holding is relatively more stressful than the post he used to hold. Aside from that, he travels to another city during weekends to study. Just imagine the stress that he has to endure everyday. Eating is one of his coping mechanisms (and I can totally relate with him in that area. LOL!) It’s just sad that it’s easier to gain weight than loose fats. :D

Disapproved!

The proposed teambuilding and planning session for my student leaders, that is. The boss was not impressed with the group’s performance since they got elected some two months ago. They have various activities and projects which were not as successfully implemented as expected. Now, they just have to make do with the activity period provided to them every MWF to hold their planning and what-have-yous.

Am I disappointed that it got disapproved? Not really. And it’s not because a task was slashed from my list. It’s a decision beyond my control. Besides, they brought this upon themselves so that’s a lesson learned.

New Challenge

Wednesday, September 2, 2009

Upon his arrival today at work, my boss called me at his office and informed me about an expected news. One of our major programs will be pushed through next school year and  yours truly who will take charge of the programs. “You need to read books, benchmark, research.”, he further instructed. It’s a good thing that my boss and I share the same vision for our students.

The program isn’t really new. It just needs to be institutionalized and formalized since a huge amount of money is being invested on it yearly. It’s not new to me either. It is expected that a lot of work has to be initiated and accomplished since we’re establishing everything. But then, I am ready for the challenge! All for the greater service to the Filipino youth and greater glory of God. Naks. :D

Working with Student Leaders

My dear student leaders are impressive! I was expecting only two or three of them to be present for our meeting but surprise, surprise, they’ve exceeded my number of attendees! We rescheduled the meeting earlier to give us enough time to update each other , discuss about the concerns they encountered while I was away and plan for a team-building and planning session before the month ends.

That certainly excited them. And I am excited about it too! Hopefully, my boss will approve of the activity which we tentatively planned to hold on a weekday since all weekends are full of college festivals. Once we get my boss’ approval, we can start working on the details tomorrow so I am keeping my fingers crossed. I am still trying to figure out who to tap as facilitators and resource persons. I have some persons in mind and I hope that they will be available that day.

My students are definitely hard-working but they still need to be pushed and pulled to get them to function. I had to remind them over and over during our meeting that they are not babies anymore so spoon-feeding is a no-no. And that they may not feel the benefits of their efforts and service today but they’ll be rewarded in one way or another someday.

Hay. The ups and downs of working with student leaders. It can really be frustrating sometimes. But the rewards are definitely great! :)

Cute Baby Announcements

Tuesday, September 1, 2009

Birth Announcement My friend, MJ, is due to deliver her baby anytime this month and we are all excited for her. She and her husband prepared for this big day. Their bags are already packed and everything that the little baby boy needs are ready too. But I wonder if they have prepared their baby announcements. If not, I’ll volunteer to order birth announcements for them from Cards-411.

At http://www.cards-411.com/, proofs are emailed to their clients within ONE hour during business day. Aside from that, the ordered photo baby announcements are printed and shipped the same day it is approved. These are important for me since we are running out of time.

We have been anticipating baby JJ’s arrival for the longest time and I trust that Cards-411 will make sure that his card announcements baby will impress family and friends.

Thank YOU!

The patience finally paid off as the pay I have been expecting for a looong time was finally given today. Aside from that, a signing bonus was also given! Woot!

I can’t help but feel grateful for all the blessings coming our way. Some are expected while most are not. The hard work, patience and diligence have been greatly rewarded and I am but an overwhelmed and grateful receiver. God is indeed good and blessings are granted in His time, His right time, when He thinks that we are ready to receive them. :)
