Nowadays, a lot of mothers are choosing to focus more on their family lives by staying home. Becoming a stay at home mother is a growing trend even among the younger generation of mothers. These women often choose to ‘pause’ their thriving career. While some end up finding work from home jobs, there are still a lot of these women who go back to work when their children have reached school age. After years of staying home, going back to work is a huge change and adjustment. Below are some tips to help make this transition easier and seamless for you and the rest of the family.
· Define your goals. This is the first thing you need to do if you want to go back to work. It will save you a lot of future confusion if you clearly define your goals and reasons for going back to work. There might be a lot of times when you might wonder why you decided to go back to work and being clear about it at the start will make it easier to remind yourself. Also, since you will be technically creating a vacancy at your home, it will be good to define your ‘non-negotiables’. These are things that you will not be willing to compromise even if you go back to work. This way, you can also discuss such things with your future boss in an interview. Defining your goals also involves determining the work conditions you want, whether you want a part-time or a full-time position, and the salary range you are willing to accept.
· Talk to your kids. Aside from you, your kids will be the ones undergoing a lot of adjustments and changes so it is good to talk to them before putting any of your plans into action. Explain to them clearly why you are going back to work. Find out their concerns and discuss them.
· Fill in the gaps with skills you have acquired. Most of the time, both you and the interviewer will be wondering how to fill up the blank years in your resume – the years when you stayed home. Your future employer will be concerned whether you still have the skills that your resume reflects. Instead of focusing on the tasks that you had as a stay at home mother, focus on the skills that you have acquired that will benefit the position you are applying for.
· Get some new skills or qualifications. It will not hurt to get some new skills or qualifications or you may choose to take some refresher courses. This will help you become more confident about what you can offer your future employer. It will also show your future employer that you are willing to learn and re-learn.
· Do not expect things to be the same at home. Accept that things will not be the same at home. You are not a supermom and going back to work means you will not be able to do everything that you used to do at home. Avoid the frustrations later on by talking to your family about dividing the housework or maybe getting someone to come in several times a week to do it.

It’s been months since I last finished a book. A fiction, that is. Last night. I skimmed through my collection of ebooks on my iTouch and chanced upon If You Could See Me Now by Cecilia Ahern. She is an author who is highly recommended by my friends but it is the first time that I read a book by her. Initially, I did not read its synopsis and I thought that not knowing the plot adds to the excitement. However, I was *forced* to Google it because I wanted to know what will happen towards the end. As if the description will give it away, eh? Haha!
