Make Your Space Your Own

Wednesday, April 25, 2012

If you have an apartment in an apartment building, it can sometimes feel like you are living in a hotel room. The space you are living in has no feel of individuality when it is surrounded by identical rooms where the only difference is the furniture inside. Sure, you can try to be unique by getting interesting art for the walls, but there is a better solution.

Make the walls into the art. If you are able to get the approval of the landlord and manager, you should think about painting the walls in a unique and exciting way. You do not have to create a masterpiece fresco, but even a unique texture or pattern can really give your home a little life. If you are of the artistic type, then throw on your nursing scrubs, pull out your brush sets and start an art project with your home as the canvas. I’m not assuming that you are a nurse, but anyone who has spent their life inhaling charcoal dust and sneezing spray paint knows that a set of easily disposable medical scrubs is a great outfit for wild creativity. Who cares if they get messy?

One big tip: make sure that you set up proper ventilation. A single fan in the window is probably not going to cut it. You want to get those paint fumes out of your house as soon as possible. Using water based paints will reduce the smell of paint and the fumes you have to deal with. Because it is inside, your work of art does not need to stand up to the rigors of the outside world and water based paint should treat you just fine. If you are a graffiti artists who uses aerosol paints or you just want to try your hands at some spray paint art, you need to get a respirator. Creating art should be fun and free, but your brain and lungs will thank you if you take the proper safety precautions.

6 Tips for Successful Relocation

Wednesday, April 11, 2012

Whether you are moving coast-to-coast or just down the street, relocating and transferring all your stuff to a new residence can be challenging and stressful all at the same time. But with careful planning and organization, you can reduce the stress that relocating brings and you will be able to avoid the most common pitfalls encountered when moving.

Below are six tips that you can follow to make your move smoother and worry free:

1. Make a Game Plan. Before you start packing or throwing stuff, gather everyone in the family first to make a plan for your move. Assign a person-in-charge to oversee all the steps for the move. Make a list of all the things that needs to be done before, during and after the move to make sure that you will not miss any small or important matter.

2. Start Packing. Once you have established your moving plan, you can start packing stuff that you will not need, a few weeks before the move. Purchase enough boxes, tapes and markers and distribute them to each member of the family. Establish a system for packing like start packing in one room before moving to another room and make sure to label the boxes with the owner’s name and the room where it came from. This will make unpacking easier when you reach your new home. Allocate boxes for things that will be put to trash or for donation so you will avoid moving things to your new place that you no longer need and will just accumulate dust.

3. Prepare an Essentials Box. This box will contain items that you should have as soon as you arrive in the new location. For sure, you will not be able to unpack right away so you should have a packing kit, which contains clothes that you can use for a few days, toiletries, plastic plates and utensils and even pet food. Medicines and medical equipment should also travel with you so you have easy access to it if the need arises.

4. Hire a Reputable Moving Company. These moving companies have the right tools and expertise to make your move stress free. Ask for recommendations from friends or check reviews of different moving companies on the Internet so you will be sure that your entrusting your stuff to a reliable moving company that will move your things to the new location safely and securely.

5. Notify Concerned Parties of your Change in Address. Advise your bank, water and electric company, etc of your change in address a few weeks in advance to make sure that your bills and letters will be delivered to your new billing address.

6. Oversee the move. On the actual moving day, make sure that at least one member of the family is present to oversee the move. This can be the person-in-charge appointed by the family during the planning process. A checklist has to be at hand to make sure that everything is taken cared of and no things will be left behind.

Just follow the 6 tips above for less chaos and drama as you pack your life and move to a new place. With careful planning and organization, you can have a stress-free relocation and you will be able to enjoy your new place sooner.

Four Easy Ways to Celebrate a Memorable Mother’s Day

Sunday, April 8, 2012

image by AD-PassionMay is such special for many of us simply because it is the month when we celebrate Mother’s Day. She (or they) deserve to be honored and made feel special on the day dedicated just for her (or them). Here are some tips to make your Mother’s Day celebration memorable:

Give a gift. Gifts for mum need not to be expensive and whatever it is that you can afford, she will absolutely appreciate it. In case you are looking, you can find a wide collection of affordable and varied Mother’s Day gift ideas at The White Company.  There are bath and body collections, furniture, clothes and many more. It offers items that fit the tastes of moms from all ages and all walks of life.

Make a plan for the day. You surely want to make mum feel special on that day so plan a day that is focused on her. If she is always on the go, you might want to make her enjoy a relaxing day with a good breakfast in bed, bubble bath and movies. Or give her a day off and send her to a spa for some pampering. You can later meet her for lunch and give her your gift.

Get everyone involved. Your siblings might have initial plans and you probably want to get involved. Or you can ask your dad if mum has hinted on any special treats that she wants to enjoy like a day at the spa or salon. Make it a family affair.

Contact her. You might be living across the miles and it’s impossible to be with mum on that special day. However, with the advancement of technology, getting in touch with a person is not a problem anymore. Call her on the phone or make a video call using the Internet. Send a card with a gifts certificate and avail of online flower shops to send her flowers on that day.

Exercise for Painful Neck

Wednesday, April 4, 2012

I have been complaining about my sore neck and shoulders for about three days now. And my poor solitary audience is the husband whom I greet with my-neck-and shoulder-are-still-aching-and-i-need-to-work-but-they’re-aching-so-bad when he calls. Most likely, these caused my injury:

  • My sleeping position since I usually cover my head with a pillow when I sleep to zero out noise and light.
  • My poor posture and prolonged period of time sitting in front of the computer blogging, surfing and checking out those pay per install programs that I recently discovered. Include in that my crafting while watching TV in bed.
I’ve already taken some pain reliever but they don’t help. I did some reading and discovered that exercise and hot compress can somehow ease the nagging pain.

The exercise to relieve painful neck: Gently stretch the neck muscles. If there is a feeling of  tightness on the right side of the neck, tip head toward the left shoulder and stretch the right arm downward. Gentle massage is also useful for freeing up knotty neck muscles.

Hopefully, this will go away soon as we have an upcoming exciting long weekend ahead.

Those Friends We Keep

Tuesday, April 3, 2012

walk with the dreamers
As the old adage says, “Tell me who your friends are and I will tell you who you are.” The company we keep indicates the kind of person that we are since they have the power to influence us as much as we have the power to influence them. It is wise to use our head and hearts when making decisions, even deciding on which friends to keep or not. There are those who inspire us to live life to the fullest but there are those who suck the life out of us. That is not good, if you ask me. And life is much better if lived without them.

So choose wisely. Life is too short to be spent with eternally miserable, whiney, hopeless people whose hearts are full of anger, resentment and hate.

Christening Gift Ideas

What gifts do you give when invited to a baptism of a child? My husband was requested by one of his former colleagues to stand as a godfather to her soon-to-be-baptized son. He said yes but the burden of shopping for a christening present falls on my me. And here is my short list of gift ideas for christening:

Symbols of faith. This includes crosses and rosaries which are very apt for the event. A book entitled My First Bible is a very good idea too, to give a child.

Stuffed animals or cozy kids area blankets with Christian emblems on them. These add a nice touch to cribs and other areas where the kid plays and rests.

Money. This is the safest one can give on any occasion. Parents prefer this too to add into the child’s savings account.

Juicing

photo by irisale87I finally found a good and delicious way to add more fruits and vegetables to my family’s diet. That is to juice them. The idea came from my group of friends and almost all of us are now into juicing. One thing that I really like about juicing is we get to consume a good amount of vegetables and fruits in juice form, which we can never consume if we were just to eat them. To make it more delicious, I add yogurt which my daughter used to detest. These days, she would gladly take a glass of fresh fruit and vegetable juice with yogurt.

For now, we’re stuck with carrot and apple juice. That’s my family’s favorite. However, we’ve also tried adding celery and two days ago, I had cucumber (something that I super rarely eat) and carrots which I find really refreshing. I am grateful for Pinterest and friends – my greatest source of recipes and inspiration for juicing. It is not only healthy but a delicious way to be fit and well.
