Good Mornight!

Thursday, November 22, 2012

It’s way past midnight and I am still up, trying to blog. I tried going to sleep at around 10PM but my mind still screams “WORK!” as I took a long and relaxing nap around 5PM. So I got up and was able to work on one task.

I do not know if it was the nap or maybe the silence of the night that I am able to work productively. It helps too that most people are asleep, there aren’t much going on on Facebook! Haha! Yes, I am guilty of working and checking on my Facebook account simultaneously. In fact, I forgot that I was corresponding with a client this morning because I was blogging and checking on my emails while talking to her. My bad!

Anyway, I should be sleeping (really) by now. I realized that my day begins at 6AM –when I prepare my daughter for school and ends at 12 midnight tops. It is not healthy, really, but work beckons. I usually take naps in between, especially when I already feel really weak and tired to continue working on either blogging tasks or commissioned polymer clay items. And I will try to sleep a wee bit earlier once the Christmas rush is over. Promise. Smile

How to Choose a Smartphone

Wednesday, November 21, 2012

Nowadays, most if not all prefer smartphones over the old feature phones. In fact, almost all cell phone developers and manufacturers are geared towards coming up with more and more models of smartphones. But what is a smartphone? According to Wikipedia, a smartphone is a mobile phone built on a mobile operating system with more advanced computer capability and connectivity. While the first smartphones had the combined functions of a personal digital assistant and a mobile phone, later models have portable media players, camera features, GPS navigation units and many more. Most new models of smartphones nowadays have high-resolution touchscreens and are capable of connecting to the Internet through Wi-FI and mobile broadband. This means that people can send emails, read news online, find a good restaurant, read a book and even play a quick game at PartyBingo.com while waiting on a line. Truly, smartphones have revolutionized the way we live, conduct business, connect with others and even entertain our selves.

With the number of smartphones out there, it can be challenging to finally decide which is the perfect choice. All brands claim to be having the best models and units. However, one need not to be swayed by colorful and convincing ads. Here are some factors to consider when buying a smartphone:

Your Needs. Find out what is important to you and what you really need. A big screen or physical keyboard? A small and handy unit or otherwise? Are you going to primarily use it to check your emails every now and then? Do you need a good camera? Identify what your needs are and finding the right unit or model of smartphone for you will become easy.

Your Budget. One big factor to consider when buying a smartphone is your budget. There are expensive brands out there and if you are capable of paying for one, there is no problem. However, if your budget is limited, you might want to go for one that you can afford. There are many good and affordable units of smartphones and all you have to do is research and ask for recommendations.

The Operating System. Nowadays, you can choose from four main smartphone choices: Android, BlackBerry, iOS, and Windows Phone. Majority of new phones nowadays run on Android which is an open source operating system. On the other hand, BlackBerry is developed by a Canadian company called Research in Motion. BlackBerry phones have BBM or BlackBerry Messenger - a proprietary Internet-based instant messenger application included on BlackBerry devices that allows messaging between BlackBerry users. iOS is the operating system exclusive on the iPhone. Windows Phone is based almost entirely on the Zune MP3 player interface. It is the only OS to employ a new type of interface as it uses Live Tiles instead of a grid of shortcuts.

Are you a Photoshop user? Surely, you get this t-shirt humor. Smile

shirt humorI have discovered Adobe Photoshop seven years ago when I started digital scrapbooking. I was looking for a good graphics designing program for the the hobby and there are many choices out there but for me, Adobe Photoshop is the best. The tricks and tips I learned about Photoshop, I was able to pass on to some students when I was still working at the university. They were willing learners and when I talked to one of them last week, he was very grateful for what he learned from me as he is able to list it as one of his skills in his CV. On the other hand, one of them uses his skill to create certificates and other layouts in school as he is now a teacher.

Their stories make me happy. I may not have been a classroom professor but I’ve taught and shared with them a skill that they can use in real life.

When You Can’t Do-It-Yourself

My father is a do-it-yourself (DIY) man. I remember growing up with him fixing broken windows, changing light bulbs, draining clogged sinks and more. When I got married and had my own family, we still relied on my father to do some repairs around the house, especially when it was beyond my husband’s capacity.

However, there are jobs that ordinary DIY men like my father can’t do. Sewer cleaning, air conditioning repairs, furnace repairs and other complicated repair and maintenance problems require the skills of professional technicians like the ones at Clear View – the trusted calgary plumber since 1997.

Clear View has been the preferred company of many residents in the Calgary area as they provide topnotch service when it comes to plumbing, drain cleaning, and maintenance of sewer, heating, air conditioning. You can rely on them to provide you with fast and efficient service 24/7. A lot of their satisfied customers have testified about the quality of their service and how efficient their technicians are.

So, if you are within Calgary and in need of a good plumber, visit Clear View’s website. It is rich with necessary information. You can contact them through the numbers they’ve provided or use their Instant Messaging feature for assistance.

Colorful Bracelets

I have been hoarding beads too, since I started with polymer clay crafting. I use them as accents to my finished pieces. While I used to buy smaller beads, I had to add bigger ones as some friends started ordering accessories. With my growing loot, I thought of creating elastic bracelets for some of my favorite girls – the kids of my friends. They served as my daughter’s gifts to them during our

post-Halloween/ pre-Christmas party early this month. Take a look:

bead bracelet for kids
Initially, I found the task challenging but with some researching, I discovered how to do this fast. I thoroughly enjoyed this, especially the picking of color combinations which are pleasing to the eyes. As a digital scrapbooker, choosing colors was an easy task since all of the kits I use have pre-determined color combinations. Now that I work with clay (and beads), I am trying to study and read about nice color palette in order to create a pleasing look. And it has been a fun journey!

Balance

I have been very scarce lately. Contrary to what others think, work-from-home moms do live a very busy and challenging life, at least in my case. I have to find a good balance when it comes to a)work b) business and c)household management. It has been a struggle to find that balance, even though I have been living this kind of life for 2.5 years now but I am not giving up. It has been a hit and miss but I am grateful that I have a husband who understand, supports and most often, helps me see things in a different perspective. The point really is: I CAN’T DO EVERYTHING and I have to forgive myself for that. But the things that I can, I do. The deadlines are never ending and most often, they make me cringe. But then, I love what I do so I am not stopping. I just need to find THAT balance. Soon.

Ways to Avoid Snacking

Tuesday, November 6, 2012

It's difficult to avoid snacking, when the option is available to us. Especially when you know you need to lose weight, or you're stressed and unhappy. Snacks won't make you feel better though, and in order to keep healthy, you should cut back. Try out these tips to avoid snacking.

Drink water.

Water is not only good for you, it also helps to fill you up. Try and drink a whole pint at a time. That way you'll feel full for longer, while you do the chores, play at www.binguez.es/

, and watch TV. If you've eaten beforehand, water is great at making the food swell up, further killing your appetite.

Substitute with fruit and vegetables.

When you feel a craving for a snack, try and eat a piece of fruit. A banana, some grapes or an apple would suffice. Plus they're full of vitamins you need on a daily basis. Maybe try and eat your recommended five a day.

Brush your teeth.

Food doesn't tend to taste very good after you've brushed your teeth. It's too minty, and makes food taste like chemicals. Therefore you won't feel as tempted to snack as you would otherwise.

What's in your fridge?

Only stock up your fridge with low calorie, low fat foods. In fact, try and stay away from the kitchen if you can. And don't load your cupboards up with snacks and junk food. Buying it gives you incentive to eat it.

You'll snack later.

Lie to yourself, and say you will snack later on, before finding yourself something else to do. Put it off and off until it's time for one of your regular meals; breakfast, lunch or dinner. Try and eat dinners which are filling. Salad on its own will make you hungry again later.

Write a list.

Every time you eat, jot it down and read it over whenever you think you want a snack. Seeing it will help discourage you, because you can't lie to yourself that way.

Photo Opps

Thursday, November 1, 2012

My family and I have been busy trooping to and fro the Metro to attend several parties. It has been so much fun though, meeting friends and enjoying their company. Our kids are having a blast too, during these parties. It is good to know that they too, have become good friends and are looking forward to seeing each other again. One activity that we all enjoy, young and old alike, is posing for photos. Some of our friends are into events coverage business and I have been asking them for copies of our photos from these parties so I can print them. I can borrow a CD compilation of the photos and have it copied by a

cd duplicating services  provider at the mall. It’s a kind act though, that they’ve already sent me soft copies of the photos via email which is very convenient.

We still have two more parties and yes, we can’t wait for more photo opps! Yay!
